Why the Independent Living service cannot be used in homes with pets

How this service works

The Independent Living service uses motion sensors to monitor activity in the home. These sensors detect movement to recognise normal routines and trigger alerts if something unusual happens.

How pets affect monitoring

If there are pets in the home, their movement will be detected by the sensors in the same way as human activity. This can cause the system to believe there is normal activity in the home and prevent safety rules from triggering, even if the resident is inactive or in need of help.

Pets can therefore disrupt monitoring and make the service unreliable, since the sensors cannot distinguish between people and animals.

Suitable for homes without pets

To ensure accurate and reliable monitoring, the Independent Living service should only be used in homes without animals that move freely indoors.
